Let's Draw the Line

Let's Draw the Line between youth, alcohol, and tobacco. Let's Draw the Line is a campaign put on by the Washington State Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking (RuaD) to raise awareness of the laws that limit outdoor advertising of alcohol and tobacco. There are some hefty fines that go along with providing alcohol to minors that many adults to do not know about. LDTL aims to educate parents and adults about these legal penalties.

According to the 2014 Healthy Youth Survey, 8% of Washington State 8th graders, 18% of 10th graders, and 35% of 12thgraders reported drinking in the past month. RuaD has developed a project to engage the community and raise awareness about alcohol advertising. LDTL is offering grants to the school clubs who choose to follow specific guidelines required by the application. One of the requirements of the grant is conducting CANS surveys in ten neighborhood stores and hanging LDTL window clings in at least five of those stores.

Squalicum Health Alliance recently conducted CANS surveys in ten local stores and succeeded in hanging window clings in 5 of those stores. Squalicum Health Alliance is set to present their findings at the Youth Summit on May 19th at the Bellingham Ferry Terminal as well as at the Spring Youth Forum at the Great Wolf Lodge.  Squalicum High School Prevention Intervention Specialist Kathie Peterson says the Health Alliance is really excited to be getting the grant.
