Stay Connected

Whatcom County shares boundaries with both the Canadian border with the Pacific Ocean. It is home to 206,000 people containing seven school districts and many additional private and alternative schools.
Values

Everyone has something to contribute, especially our youth. There is benefit in connecting people to the community, and to their passions.

Local data shows that individuals that are connected to their passions, as well as their community, demonstrate healthier behaviors and are less at risk for substance abuse and other problems.

We are always looking for diverse representation. So come, have fun, get engaged, and share your assets with the community!

Engaging Community

Many of WPC’s efforts have focused on creating the type of community we want to work, live, and play in. While this has meant starting new projects to meet emerging needs at time times, we’ve also done a lot to support ongoing efforts that build on existing strengths in the community. The following is a list of current and past efforts coordinated by WPC:

• Drug Free Communities Support Grant
• Prevention Redesign Initiative (Ferndale High School and Shuksan Middle School)
• “Conversations That Matter” community events
• Community Engagement‐outdoor activities
• Adverse Childhood Experiences Training
• Town Hall Meetings on Underage Drinking
• Gang prevention education and planning
• Community Assessment and Planning

Funding

The WPC coordinates services through a variety of funding sources, to address local problems. These sources include:

  • Drug Free Communities Grant

  • Local Sales Tax

  • Division of Behavioral Health & Recovery

  • Community Mobiliation Against Substance Abuse

  • Family Policy Council

Resources from Educational Service District #189 also provide school-based prevention and intervention specialists. Beyond direct funding, coalition's members provide a wide range of essential knowledge, skills experience and other resources that continue to benefit Whatcom County.
